This pin is a replica of a military adornment, worn by Nauvoo Legion members. The Nauvoo Legion was organized on Feb. 1, 1841. The First Presidency declared that “it will enable us to show our attachment to the state and nation, as a people, whenever the public service requires our aid.” By the spring of 1844, the Legion was estimated to be in excess of 5,000 men.
